ALL IN A NAME
Luz – Spanish for light.
Vara – a nod to variation, movement, and creative expression.
Together, they form Varaluz: light with character, light with soul, light that refuses to blend in.
But Vara-Luz was never just a word.
It was a name.
It was a life.
And it was the light that shaped everything to come.

LIGHT WITH A NARATIVE
LIT WITH LUZ
Luz Elva Carrillo – Mama Luz to those who knew her – was raised in a rural farming community in Mexico. As a single mother of six, her life was shaped by relentless manual labor –stretching meager means to their limits, and turning scarcity into sustenance.
From that life of endurance emerged something greater: a woman whose presence brought warmth, hope, and light to everyone around her.

Mama Luz did not conform to what hardship was supposed to make of her. She worked relentlessly, not out of bitterness, but devotion. And despite a life shaped by survival, she chose joy and as a result – light followed her everywhere.
She believed people mattered more than rules, happiness more than appearances. She welcomed everyone as they were. Difference never frightened her – because to Luz, it belonged. She lived with joy, generosity, and a quiet defiance of social norms, and as a result, she was deeply loved by all who knew her.

Mama Luz didn’t design fixtures – but she designed a way of living that became our foundation. Varaluz is how we honor her: her courage, her generosity, and the way she brought warmth, welcome, and light into every space she entered.
This is where Varaluz began.
With light. With love. With LUZ.

An origin written in meaning
A NAME WRITTEN IN LIGHT
When Ron Henderson and Jorge Carrillo –Luz’s son– began dreaming of a company, they knew they weren’t just naming a business; they were honoring a life that embodied what they hoped to create. Luz – Spanish for light – was already written into their story, not just as a name, but as a reflection of who she was. With Ron’s instinct for variation, artistry, and the unexpected, vara joined luz – and Varaluz was born: light with character, light with soul, light that refuses to blend in.

Handcrafted. Conscious. Uncompromising.
WHEN LIGHT TOOK SHAPE
Founded in 2006, Varaluz emerged with a clear point of view – to create illuminated works of art that were handcrafted, consciously made, and guided by heart rather than trends. From the beginning, sustainability and artistry went hand in hand, shaping a brand rooted in eco-minded materials, human hands, and a belief that light should feel personal, expressive, and alive.

Design guided by intention
LIGHT THAT MOVES
From the beginning, Ron Henderson believed lighting should do more than illuminate. It should provoke feeling. Tell stories. And honor the beauty that emerges when every piece is shaped by human hands – hands that carry intention, expression, care, and a life behind them.
That belief became our compass. We didn’t chase trends – we created LIGHT THAT MOVES.
Light that moves people. Light that moves spaces. Light that moves design forward.

GROWTH & CHANGE
A TURNING POINT
Varaluz was built on the belief that artistry, craftsmanship, and conscience must coexist. Recycled steel, hand-blown glass, and low-impact finishes weren’t trends—they were commitments. But as the company grew, so did the complexity of protecting those values. Rooted in the hands of makers and artists, Varaluz didn’t need a new vision—it needed the strength to support the one it had always believed in.
Growth brought new demands—of scale, leadership, and structure—beyond what a purely creative foundation could carry alone. The heart of Varaluz remained strong, but the moment called for guidance, experience, and reinforcement to ensure the story could continue.

SAFEGUARDING A SOUL
THE ALLIANCE
In 2025, Varaluz found its counterpart in CIANA Lighting. A partnership built not on change, but on alignment. CIANA brought structure, stability, and scale—creating the foundation needed to support handcrafted design as it evolved and matured. Just as important, they shared the same values: respect for the human hand, reverence for materials, and a belief that lighting should be artful, expressive, and enduring.
With CIANA, Varaluz gained the ability to do more without becoming less—to deliver consistently, grow thoughtfully, and bring Light That Moves into more spaces without losing the warmth, variation, and humanity that define it.

VARA-LUZ LIVES ON
THE NEXT CHAPTER
Today, Varaluz stands with CIANA at the intersection of art and ability – and stronger than ever – where imagination is supported by infrastructure, and sustainability is matched by scale. Every piece still bears the mark of human hands. Every decision still reflects intention—echoing the life of a woman who shaped everything she touched with care, generosity, and light.
MADE TO MOVE
VARALUZ TODAY
Today, Varaluz carries forward the same light that inspired its beginning—a belief rooted in warmth, generosity, and the power of human connection. From a name born in honor of Mama Luz to a brand shaped by imagination, intention, and conscience, Varaluz has always believed that light should do more than illuminate. It should move. Every design reflects that origin: expressive, handcrafted, and unapologetically human—created as Light That Moves people, spaces, and stories.
Strengthened through our partnership with CIANA Lighting, Varaluz now stands at the intersection of art and ability. CIANA’s decades of heritage, global relationships, and operational excellence provide the structure, stability, and scale that allow our craft to thrive—without compromise. Together, we create Light That Moves responsibly and consistently, without losing the warmth, variation, and humanity that define us. We’re not producing more for the sake of more. We’re producing better. Better craftsmanship. Better sustainability. Better experiences.
This is Varaluz—rooted in soul, supported by strength, and built to endure.
