HOPE LAMP | Providing hope, healing, and freedom for survivors of sex trafficking
Every year, over one million children are trafficked into the global sex trade. In the United States alone, a child is sexually assaulted every nine minutes
These are staggering realities – heavy, heartbreaking, and difficult to take in. But they are not the end of the story. Because even in the darkest of places, there can be light.
At CIANA, light is not only what we create – it is what we believe in. Light pushes back the darkness. It steadies us. It carries the quiet promise of renewal and hope.
When we looked for ways to extend light beyond our own designs, we felt a deep pull toward the Malouf Foundation and their mission: confronting child sexual exploitation through education, healing, and advocacy.
That partnership opened the door to work with Julie Whitehead—wife, mother, and survivor of sex trafficking. From the beginning, Julie’s perspective shaped the heart of this piece. She helped us see how light could serve its highest purpose: as a tangible reminder to survivors that they are seen, valued, and never alone.
Julie shared during the design process: “I know how difficult it is to heal from sexual abuse and how far reaching the effects are. I want to help create something that can bring a source of healing for survivors.”
Her vision began with a bird—a symbol of hope, freedom, and the possibility of rising again. Inspired by that meaning, our team set out to bring it to light in every detail. The lamp was designed to glow softly, responding to the gentlest touch, so that a survivor waking from a nightmare could find comfort and peace in its illumination, without the shock of a sudden light. It was also important to the CIANA team that the light would stand the test of time. “The piece is crafted from pure bronze and utilizes LED bulbs so that it was built to last in both craftsmanship and in meaning,” says Varaluz x CIANA President, Kevin Bauer.
This fixture is more than a lamp. It is a symbol of survival and healing. For those who’ve experienced sexual trauma, even the simple act of turning on a light can become an act of empowerment – a moment of peace and control in a world where that concept was once lost.
